Tips for Maintaining a Healthy Work-Life Balance

Work is an important part of all of our lives. Most of us spend at least 8 hours a day, 5 days a week in our jobs. But work isn’t the be all and end all!

Success is important but so is your happiness, which is why it’s so important to maintain a healthy work-life balance. We’ve put together some simple tips which will help you focus when you’re at work, and disconnect when you’re at home.


Stop looking at your emails outside of work

Emails can be a real distraction even when you’re at work, and this is even more true when you’re at home. If you allow email notifications to you phone, or check your emails on your laptop every evening, all of your time will start to be consumed by your work life.

There are times when it might be impossible to ignore emails outside of work, such as when you have an important deadline, but it’s important to set general rules and boundaries. That way, you have a clear division between work and home.


Find ways to release any stress

Stress can impact us all in different ways and on different levels and it’s really important to find ways to combat it. Try out a few different options and see what works for you.

Lots of people find that exercise really helps, whether it’s running, boxing, football or yoga. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a lover of team sports or you prefer to go solo, exercise is a great way to release stress and stay healthy both mentally and physically.

Other options might include meditation sessions to really get out of your head every once in a while. Or, it could be as simple as taking some time to spend with your friends and family. Whatever works for you, just make sure you’re taking some time to forget about deadlines and to-do lists.


Be honest about your workload

Sometimes, our workloads can get a little out of hand and in those situations it’s okay to ask for help from your colleagues or let your manager know. In fact, this is a far better approach than letting the workload overwhelm you.

Being honest about your workload might also include some delegation of your tasks.


Learn to prioritise

It’s going to be hard to fit in everything you want to do in work and life, so the important thing is to prioritise. Work out what is most important to you - is it family? Your career? A particular hobby? Once you’ve identified your top three, you know what to make the most time for.


Embrace any potential for flexible working

Work-home balance is often about finding ways to blend the two together so that you can be more efficient in all areas of your life. Flexible working is becoming increasingly important to employees, as it allows them to run errands during the day, do the school run or work from home while an important delivery is arriving.

It can sometimes be impossible to fit everything into the strict work/life schedule which is why flexible working is something more and more companies are considering.

Those are just some of the tips for maintaining a healthy-work life balance, but it’s mainly down to you to find strategies that work. If you can identify any unhealthy habits or things that are holding you back, you can also come up with ways to work around them.
